Who applies via Germany

Your application is handled by the mission responsible for the place where you usually or permanently live. Check that specific German mission’s website for where and how to book.

The German Embassy is the main route for people travelling to Germany. But you can also apply there for other countries: Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Luxembourg.

Which visa you need

It depends on the purpose of your trip and how long you plan to stay. For trips of up to 90 days, a Schengen visa is generally used; for longer stays, a national visa.

How the appointment system works

Online appointment booking is free. You can book it yourself or ask someone you trust to do it.

Use an email address you definitely have access to. All notifications will go there, including the message with your appointment date.

Before booking, carefully check all details. You will not be able to correct them later.

No appointments available? The German side advises checking the system regularly: new slots appear continuously.

If you are applying as a family, Germany requires a separate slot for each applicant, except children under 12. All applicants must attend in person.

When to start looking for a slot

A Schengen application can be submitted no earlier than six months before the trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before it. You may book an appointment earlier than that.

Germany usually releases slots about once a month and for the following two months at once. So if you are planning to travel in December for Christmas, you should start trying to book in October.

Can you apply online

A Schengen visa cannot be submitted online for now. You can fill in the form on the website, but you still need to bring the printed version to your appointment.

Online applications are available for visas for work, study, vocational training, and family reunification. You still need to attend in person to give biometrics, pay the fee, and show the original documents.

After an online submission, the application is first pre-checked and you are informed whether everything has been completed correctly and in full. After that, you can use the portal to book with the mission or an external service provider.

Fees and processing times

The standard fee is €90 for a Schengen visa and €75 for a national visa. For a properly completed Schengen application, the consulate generally makes a decision within 15 calendar days.

Long-stay visas take longer. Processing may take several months depending on the purpose of travel.

What applicants in Cyprus should keep in mind

Germany usually requires a valid plastic residence permit card and applies its own rules on how long that card must remain valid. If your status in Cyprus is not straightforward, message us before starting the search — we can advise on documents and on the appointment.

We book appointments for the German Embassy in Nicosia. We can send you the document list for your application and advise on the documents. More details are on the Cyprus appointment page.

You pay only after you receive our appointment confirmation. Before that, we do not take payment.

If the application is handled through a visa centre, its visa and service fees are paid separately from our service. Booking on your own does not remove those fees.

If your case is urgent

For urgent situations, the German Embassy asks applicants to write through the contact form on its website.
